The Absheron clay formations have a high plastic limit and tendency to swell when exposed to water, meaning classic open-hole rotary drilling without casing often leads to hole collapse or skin friction reduction.
Consequently, the double-casing system is highly recommended. The out-casing rotates and breaks through the clay and limestone layers, while the internal drill pipe uses water or air flushing to clear cuttings.
